What is this?
Your awake value (clinically referred to as wake after sleep onset or WASO) comprises periods of wakefulness after you have fallen asleep, including awakenings you may not even be aware of. If you wake up regularly during the night or lie awake in bed for long periods of time, you can expect your awake value to be higher. Many things can cause you to wake up at night, including light, sounds, needing to use the toilet, feeling hot or cold, alcohol or caffeine consumption before bedtime, stress, and sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea.
Why is it important?
It is perfectly natural to wake up at night, but spending too much time awake during a sleep session will reduce your asleep value, which may in turn negatively impact your health.
Normative ranges
Although you may not remember each awakening, it’s normal to spend between 15 and 45 minutes awake per night.
